Overview

Portugal’s dynamic capital meets the laid-back island lifestyle of Funchal on our Ten-Night Lisbon and Madeira Holiday.

Historic Lisbon is one of Europe’s oldest cities. It’s seen the rise and fall of the Roman empire, invasions by the Visigoths and the Moors, devastating earthquakes and tsunamis, the demise of two royal dynasties and a Carnation Revolution.

Modern-day Lisbon is an exciting, 21st century city – you’ll spend five nights in the heart of the capital, with its most-popular districts within easy walking distance: the grand riverfront Praca Comercio, the tangled medieval streets of Alfama, and the exceptional restaurants and café bars of Bairro Alto. You’ll also have a chance to explore further afield: our guides will show you the white sands of Cascais and fairytale palaces of Sintra, and historic Belem with its beautiful 16th century Jeronimos Monastery is a short tram ride away.

Leaving the mainland, you’ll fly west – to the Atlantic island of Madeira for a five-night stay in the capital Funchal. There’s a noticeable gear change – the Madeiran pace of life is much more relaxed, and you’ll have time to explore the city at your leisure: the famous Zona Velha old town district, the Monte Palace Gardens and the Carro de Cesto taboggans are all close by.

You’ll also explore the island’s breathtaking scenery – from the coastal villages and river valleys of Eastern Madeira, to the famous Cabo Girao skywalk and the secluded Curral das Freiras Nuns Valley – all in the company of our resident guide.

Itinerary

You’ll begin your holiday with a direct flight to Lisbon. Our driver will collect you on arrival for your transfer to the My Story Hotel Tejo the centre of the city.
You’ll explore Lisbon on our Vinhos and Petiscos tuk-tuk tour. It’s a great introduction to Lisbon, its layout, history and cuisine, with visits to Alfama, Graca and Bairro Alto.
You’ll have a free day to visit historic Belém and the beautiful 16th century Jeronimos Monastery.
It’s a short walk from your hotel to the Castelo de Sao Jorge – you might also like to take a ferry across the Tagus River to visit one of Lisbon’s most-photographed landmarks: the Santuario de Cristo Rei catholic monument. You’ll also have a magnificent view of the Ponte 25 de Abril suspension bridge.
You’ll head east on a guided tour of the palace town of Sintra, which sits high on a granite peak to the northwest of Lisbon. You’ll also visit Cabo da Roca – the most westerly point of mainland Europe – and the popular seaside resort of Cascais.
You’ll be transferred to the airport for your direct flight to Madeira. Our driver will collect you on arrival for your transfer to the Quintinha Sao Joao in Funchal.

Your first full day is free so you can explore Funchal: the Se Catedral de Nossa Senhora da Assuncao, the Mercado dos Lavradores farmers’ market, Blandy’s wine lodge, and the Zona Velha Old Town district.
You’ll head down to the marina for a whale and dolphin watching trip. The waters around Madeira are one of the best places to observe cetaceans and ocean wildlife: bottlenose dolphins and sperm whales can be seen throughout the year.
You'll take a guided tour of the river valleys and coastal towns of eastern Madeira.
You could end your stay with a guided tour of central Madeira and the Nuns Valley.
You'll be transferred to the airport for your flight home.
