Overview

Our Casa do Julio Madeira Villa Holiday is the perfect way to relax with family and friends.

The secluded southwest of Madeira is renowned for its sunny micro-climate – nowhere more so than the peaceful harbour town of Calheta. Calheta’s popular for its bustling marina, it’s rum distillery, and its welcoming cafe bars and restaurants, all overlooked by Casa do Julio: your spacious home from home, with its sweeping views across Calheta valley and the azure Atlantic Ocean.

As an island community, Madeirans have a strong connection to the sea – we’ve included a whale and dolphin watching trip with our favourite crew at the local marina, and you’ll also visit the Garajau Marina Reserve for a combined kayaking and snorkelling tour.

We’ll also included a hire car, to allow you to shop for supplies and explore Madeira’s legendary landscape – from the dramatic central mountains and high Encumeada pass, to the rugged north coast cliffs which connect Sao Vicente and Porto Moniz, via the beautiful river valleys and forests of Santana and Machico in the east. You’ll also spend time in the Funchal: capital of Madeira and the island’s bustling, cultural centre.

Direct flights are included in all our Madeira Villa Holidays. We remove the stress from booking flights by finding you the best deal from your closest airport – we include all the luggage you’ll need so there are no nasty surprises or extras to pay at the airport, and we’ll select the best available seats for you in advance.

Itinerary

You’ll begin your holiday with a direct flight from to Madeira. You’ll collect a hire car on arrival before driving along the south coast to Casa do Julio in Calheta.
We’ll leave your first morning free so you can relax, and pop to the nearby supermarket for supplies. In the afternoon, you’ll head to the local marina in Calheta for a whale and dolphin watching trip. The waters around Madeira are one of the best places to observe cetaceans and ocean wildlife: bottlenose dolphins, Atlantic spotted dolphins and sperm whales can be seen throughout the year.
You might like to drive into Funchal - capital of Madeira and the island’s bustling, cultural centre – to visit the Se Catedral, Blandy’s Wine Lodge and the Zona Velha old town district, before taking the cable car up to the Monte Palace Tropical Gardens.
You’ll head north, via the Encumeada tunnel, to visit the Casacata Veu da Noiva waterfall, the coastal hamlets of Seixal and Ribeira da Janela, and Porto Moniz - one of the best swimming spots on the island.
You’ll head east to the beach at Praia da Garajau for a kayaking and snorkelling session. The calm waters of this protected nature reserve are ideal for beginners and our guides will be on hand to assist if this is your first time kayaking at sea.
You’ll walk the island’s most popular trail: the Rabacal: Levada do Risco trail, via the 25 Fontes Levada to the beautiful green lagoon of the same name - where 25 streams fall from a 30m high cliff to form a natural pool.
For your final full day, you might like to explore central Madeira: the coastal town of Camara de Lobos, the miradouro at Cabo Girao and the Curral das Freiras - the famously secluded Nun’s Valley.
You'll return your hire car to the airport before flying home.
